✦ Historic amphitheater built in 1931, restored in 2004

✦ Shaded setting surrounded by tall oak trees in Greenwood Park

✦ Bench seating for about 200 guests, perfect for intimate ceremonies

Sylvan Amphitheater is a historic outdoor venue in Greenwood Park, just steps from the Des Moines Art Center and the Clare and Miles Mills Rose Garden. Built in 1931 and later restored, it’s recognized as a local historic landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This hidden gem features bench seating for about 200 guests, making it perfect for intimate outdoor weddings that still feel connected to the city.

Surrounded by tall oaks, the stage feels naturally tucked into the landscape, creating a calm, timeless atmosphere for a ceremony. It’s simple, beautiful, and just secluded enough to feel like your own private corner of Des Moines. I’ve photographed weddings here and love how seamlessly it pairs with the Art Center for a reception — guests can take a short walk through Greenwood Park to the Art Center’s courtyard and reflecting pool for cocktails and dinner, surrounded by world-class architecture and art.

If a quiet ceremony surrounded by trees sounds like your kind of day, I’d love to be part of it. Get in touch and tell me your vision. →
